Company values are the beliefs and principals that motivate your staff. Values give them a reason or a “why” they are showing up each day in your business. They underpin the relationship staff have with clients and without clients, you don’t have a business.
A company’s values should define the culture you want your staff to experience every day. They should be a benchmark of the behaviours and actions of the staff and encourage a positive mindset. They should promote inclusivity and be the vision your staff have of their workplace. Quality values should drive action and be the point of reference for all staff, managers and business owners.
Company values should not be a document of jargon or buzzwords and should not be used to intimidate. They are best when created through a consultative process with staff allowing all ideas to be put forward using a safe and relaxed space to do this. All staff should be able to contribute to their values and be part of creating the culture and environment they want in their workplace. You spend a long time employing the right staff so why not let them thrive in the space they have created?
By creating, implementing and regularly reviewing your company’s values you are showing your staff, your customers and your competitors that you are passionate about creating a business that will deliver on its promises and be in it for the long haul.
